DIRECTOR’S STATEMENT

I first moved to Portugal in 2019, less than a year into Bolsonaro’s election. One of his first acts of power was to extinguish the Ministry of Culture. This was a huge hit to the culture sector, but especially the film industry which I had worked for many years. How could someone that tweets about golden showers become president? At that point, I had to leave the country. It was the only way I found to continue making films. 

The fight for democracy and for the free world is a lifetime commitment. Brazil got rid of the far-right for at least a decade to come, however, fascism is still on the rise. Even Portugal, a country that has such a long and respectable leftist history, has demonstrated a significant growth of the far-right in recent elections. “Golden Shower”, then, is a project that questions this rise, born from Bolsonaro’s infamous tweets and the need to question fascism that has affected both countries. But it does so by tackling the misogyny directed to women in our society today. It’s not a film that aims to be revolutionary. It’s just a silly film about sex. 

To make “Golden Shower”, I had the support of many incredible women professionals, Portuguese and Brazilian alike. Our set was a space where we could create and laugh and find companionship in each other. “Golden Shower” is a political film, but the priority is to be a funny one, as we must laugh at the ridiculousness of those who wish to oppress us.

NOTA DE INTENÇÃO DA DIRETORA

Em 2019, durante os primeiros anos da presidência de Bolsonaro, decidi me mudar para Portugal. Uma das primeiras medidas de Bolsonaro no cargo foi a extinção do Ministério da Cultura, um duro golpe para o setor cultural. Especialmente para a indústria cinematográfica brasileira, onde trabalhei por muitos anos. Como poderia alguém que escrevia tweets sobre golden showers virar presidente do país? Naquela época, deixar o Brasil foi a única opção para continuar a realizar filmes.

A batalha pela democracia e pela liberdade é um compromisso para a vida toda. Embora o Brasil tenha se distanciado da extrema-direita por pelo menos uma década, o fascismo continua a crescer no mundo. Até mesmo Portugal, que uma história tão respeitável como um país socialista, tem visto um avanço preocupante da extrema-direita em suas eleições recentes. "Golden Shower" é um projeto que surge como uma resposta à ascensão do fascismo, inspirado pelos notórios tweets de Bolsonaro e pela urgência de desafiar o fascismo que impacta ambos os países. O filme também aborda a misoginia dirigida às mulheres na sociedade atual. Não pretende ser uma obra revolucionária. É apenas um filme bobo sobre sexo.

Para realizar "Golden Shower", contei com a colaboração de diversas mulheres incríveis, tanto portuguesas quanto brasileiras. Nosso set foi um espaço de criação, risadas e companheirismo. Embora "Golden Shower" tenha uma forte carga política, a prioridade é manter o humor, porque precisamos rir diante do quão ridículos são aqueles que tentam nos oprimir.
